About This Website (technical details)

It's hosted in Oracle Cloud on one of their free VMs. On the VM there's a docker container running apache. Files are shared from the host VM to the docker container via a bind mount, so that changes are instant.

For HTTPS, I use certbot. Since I purchased my domain on Cloudflare, I can use a Cloudflare API token to verify ownership of the domain. I added a --deploy-hook to the certbot command to automatically restart the docker container upon certificate renewal.

The front end is simple HTML and CSS. I photoshopped each of the images myself.

I want to learn programming, where should I start?

For beginners or kids, try Scratch. The drag-and-drop blocks may seem very simple, but you can create very complex games. My favorite scratch game, another good one

For most people, I highly recommend FreeCodeCamp. If you follow the curriculum in order, you will first learn to design websites like this one. This is highly rewarding because it allows you to very quickly build something real with the skills you have learned.

Once you've made your own website, try hosting it yourself! I recommend buying your domain from Cloudflare. You can host it in your home if you have the right hardware (you'll need a dedicated computer like a Raspberry Pi that's seperate from your personal computer). Otherwise, spin up a small VM in your favorite cloud provider. They all have free trials but I've found Oracle's to be the most generous. For an easier solution, you can set up GitHub Pages to work with your custom domain. You can find a YouTube tutorial to help with any of these methods.

You should learn Git as soon as possible, and I recommend storing all your code on GitHub for the sake of backup and synchronization between devices.

If cybersecurity sounds more fun, try PicoCTF. These are fun challenges that will force you to stretch your brain. However, the challenges are nothing like what you would find in the real world. If you want to learn to actually hack stuff or are considering a career in cybersecurity, OffSec has certifications that will teach you real skills, and are the most valued in the industry. Be warned: they are difficult and expensive.

If you scrolled all the way down here, you must be wanting to see some cute cat pictures

The orange cat is named Buddy. We got him at an AirBNB in Pennsylvania which was on an Amish farm. Long story short my mom saw him and picked him up, the owners of the farm offered him to us, and one trip to Petsmart later we had ourselves a cat.

The black and white one is Nosey. Named for his boldness and energy, he would always initiate wrestling matches with Buddy. We got him from family that had an extra kitten. My mom disliked how he would jump on counters and rub her legs, so we eventually gave him to the neighbor.

The trouble with a kitten is that it eventually becomes a cat.
